“Longest Icicle Contest” Comes to Jeffersonville’s Winterfest

Cambridge Area Rotary proudly introduces the latest addition to Winterfest: The Longest Icicle Contest.

Start watching those icicles now, and bring the longest one you’ve got to Cambridge Elementary School on January 28, anytime between 2 and 6 pm. If you are worried about a thaw, harvest the icicle early and put it in your freezer—depending on the weather, the winner might be six inches long, or it could be six feet. Entries will be judged on the length of the intact icicle. The winner will be the person with the longest unbroken icicle. There is no entry fee. For additional contest rules, see below.

Candidates will participate in one of three categories, in which there are a variety of prizes:

Children (to age 12) – Trophies to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place
Household – Trophy to 1st place, as well as a Home Performance with Energy Star Audit generously donated by Efficiency Vermont.
Business/Commercial – Trophy to 1st place.

Trophies will be awarded right before the fireworks, at approximately 8 pm.

In addition to the energy audit, the winner in the Household category could qualify for up to $2500 in incentives toward the cost of work that will increase their household’s energy efficiency. Efficiency Vermont will have a booth next to Cambridge Area Rotary’s icicle-measuring tent, with information for all about increasing household energy efficiency.

Even if you won’t be able to bring in an icicle, you can still participate in the fun by participating in the 50/50 contest to guess the winning icicle’s length. Tickets for the 50/50 will be on sale during Cambridge Area Rotary’s Pie for Breakfast, from 9 am – noon in the CES cafeteria, and on the field at the Cambridge Area Rotary Longest Icicle tent from noon – 2 pm. Tickets will be $2.00 each or $5.00 for three. The winner of the 50/50 will be the person who guesses the length closest to that of the winner of the grand prize longest icicle without going over. In the case of a tie, the prize will be split equally between all winners. Funds raised will support the maintenance and upkeep of the ice rink donated by Cambridge Area Rotary and many other local organizations.

Contest Rules:
1. No center support (rebar, wire, wood) is allowed.
2. Each icicle may only be entered in one division.
3. Icicle must be placed on the measuring table in the Rotary tent.
4. No machinery may be used to move the icicle to the measuring table. In the household and commercial/business divisions, not more than four people may move the icicle to the measuring table, one of whom must be the entrant. In the children’s division (12 and under), up to two volunteers may help the children; neither volunteer may be more than 16 years old. Two additional Rotary volunteers will be on hand to help.
5. Only the longest unbroken section will be measured.
6. Measuring begins at 2 pm and ends at 6 pm.
7. Entrants in the Household division must be residents of Vermont. Proof of residency is required.
